A landslide occurred on Tuesday, 5th of November 2024, at around 10:40 AM at Dschang Cliff in the West Region of Cameroon. This natural disaster cut traffic along the Dschang-Santchou road axis. In a report by the West Regional Governor, Awa Fonka Augustine indicated that early attempts to clear the debris of the first landslide resulted in the burying of 03 heavy machinery engaged for the clearing work, as well as 3 coaster-type transport vehicles, 5 picnic-type vehicles, several motorcycles, passersby, and identified residents.
An unknown number of people were trapped under debris, and authorities have reported at least four fatalities—four bodies have been recovered from the rubble and several others injured. The Dschang-Santchou road has been prohibited to all types of movements, and traffic has been diverted to the Kekem-Bafang-Bafoussam route.
Again, administrative authorities have instructed the population to move away from the disaster zone, which is still highly susceptible. Showers and isolated thunderstorms are forecast in the region over the coming days, which could result in flooding and additional landslides. Authorities could issue mandatory evacuation orders for flood- or landslide-prone communities over the coming days.
